Exploding Pine Tree

Below are a few photos of a 60 foot pine tree. I was sitting in my van during a severe rain storm about 40 foot away. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something white, fly past the windshield. After the rain stopped, I opened the door and saw.....

Notice the right side of the trunk

Damage to the pine tree trunk is massive.

This is one unhappy tree.

Notice on the ground to the left of the trunk. This is where the lightning grounded through a root that is close to the surface of the lawn.

This is a closeup of the worst part of the exploded root. The 'trench' that was made from the grounded lightning bolt was about 5 inches wide, 4 inches deep and about 8 foot long.

Don't bite your nails, don't pick your nose, and DON'T take cover under trees during a thunder storm!!
